This book tells, in first person, the stories of women who—after long periods of hospitalization in a psychiatric hospital in Argentina—were able to rebuild their lives in the community thanks to their own efforts and the support of community-based mental health care and accompaniment programs.
Through their accounts, the book shows how people’s rights, dignity, and autonomy can be restored, and how public policy, professional commitment, and collective action can bring about real change in people’s lives. More than a chronicle of hospitalization or rehabilitation, In Their Own Voices is a testament to the persistence of life, the power of community care, and the transformation of the mental health system.
